General Manager Roger Klein
Born in Bern, Switzerland, in 1959 (the Year of the Pig–Oink-oink!), Roger D. Klein was raised in a “mall” town in New Jersey. Thankfully, after his parents’ divorce, he was whisked away to adventures in New York’s East Village. Regrettably, after a lost weekend at the St. Mark’s Baths, Roger was shipped back to New Jersey where he lived until university. After graduation from University of Miami, Roger worked as a bartender at Chez Louise, a Cubano dyke bar in Miami where he learned how to make a Mojito (and how to fight).
Returning to Manhattan with a degree in Motion Picture and Television Production–and a fierce tan!–Roger worked on Madison Avenue, editing film for commercials. He also tended bar at trendy nightclubs such as Tracks, Uncle Charlie’s, Kamikaze, The Underground, and Studio 54 (sadly, long after Liza’d left the building).
Roger traveled throughout S.E. Asia and Australia for the next five years. He taught scuba diving to unsuspecting tourists. He also worked as a bartender [Midnight Shift and the Oxford Pub] in Sydney, Australia. Roger eventually landed in San Francisco where he started tending bar at the Deco Lounge. After almost six years behind the bar, he is now Deco’s general manager.
Roger enjoys his simple life as a “Loinboy”, living and working in the Tenderloin, enjoying what San Francisco–and Goodwill–has to offer. He made his acting debut in the comedic movie “The Window” (http://thewindowfilm.com) which premiered at the Castro Theater. After seeing his performance, however, Roger quickly gave up acting and went back to tending bar.
He would like to thank his late Grandpa Leon, who throughout Roger’s childhood paid him a penny for each sit-up and each push-up.
